There is a life and there is a death, and there are beauty and melancholy between.
— Albert Camus
What is the significance of wearing black after someone dies? Some many historians believe that the Romans were the first to use this habit. Residents would change their typically white toga for a black one to mourn a person’s death. In fact, at a Hindu funeral, most individuals wear white. White represents purity in Hindu culture, and it is used to honor the deceased and the family. I must admit that I am skeptical about the entire color-coded event. Death is the most natural part of life. The ultimate truth. It must not be mourned, rather celebrated. I’m at a funeral for my 7-year-old nephew. He spent his little life in torment due to the terrible disease. The funeral is being held in his honor. As far as I knew, he was fond of the color orange. Everyone should have worn that.
After many years, my sister finally lighted a cigarette. She was certain that allowing toxins into her body would threaten her kid, when he was around. She sighed with the first drag of the cigarette. At that first puff, she nearly seemed to have relaxed and found calm. She glances at me and walks over to me.
“Never expected you to show up,” she said to me while desperately taking her time with cigarette and giving her sole focus to that.
“You started smoking again.”
“Yes, detective Poirot.”
She constantly defended herself with sarcasm. I like that about her.
“My husband and I are gonna get separated.”
“Marriages do not work anyways.”
She smiles sarcastically and nods her head while down at her shoes.
“Wow, you are not even going to ask me why we decided to do that?”
“Well, it’s obvious, isn’t it?”
“How so?”
“You both now blame each other for your son’s death. You would believe that if your spouse had done more work to offer better care for your kid, that kid might live to witness some more sunrises. Your husband, on the other hand, would believe that only if you spotted his health issues at a young age, he would be able to take the kid to those theme parks where they have always wanted to go. You’ll be able to move on with your life this way, but only because you both believe you deserve nothing but pain because you’ve both lived beyond your child’s life. You’re both going to disregard the reality that it was your son’s fate and the truth of his destiny that caused him to leave this world so young. That may be difficult to accept right now, but no one could save him but death.”
She gazed at me for a few seconds, nearly forgetting about the cigarette she had been fascinated with a few minutes before.
“I never liked you.” She stated this while wrapping her arms around me and pulling me into a hug. I do not enjoy hugs, but this woman just lost her child. So I have let her hug me.
“Thank you for showing up.” She says this as she walks approaching her husband. At first, she takes his hand gently. Her husband appears confused and irritated, but suddenly a tear falls down his cheek and he grips her hand firmly. They were never gonna be alright. They can, however, be there for each other when neither of them is feeling okay.
